Playing not to lose Inspirations
|
Not sure how this might relate to every day life, or the treatment of cancer, but in the world of football, it is a sure fire way to lose a game.
I saw it a couple of weeks ago when Baltimore lost to New England in the final seconds of the game, and you can see it for yourself, in the body language off Hines Ward, as my beloved Steelers lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars last night.
After being down by 18 points, in the 3rd quarter, the Steelers played brilliantly to gain the lead by one point, with just over 6 minutes remaining in the 4 quarter, with a wide ranging attack of short passes, and the occasional run.
But with just over 3 minutes to go in the game, the Steelers resorted strictly to their running game in an attempt to run the clock down, and ended up giving the ball back to Jacksonville with 2:38 to go.
And the rest is history.

Relief at last! Inspirations, Thoughts
|
The audit’s over! And we passed with flying colors!
Even though our auditor cut us some slack, due to the situation the company was in, resulting from some ineptitude on the part of our registrar, that didn’t relieve any of the stress, I can’t help but feel, every time I go through this [twice a year] audit. And can you believe we (the company) pay several thousand dollars to go through this stress?
There is nothing I dread more than going through an AS9100 audit, and that includes the cold weather we have been experiencing over the past several days.
I’d gladly (and I think everyone else at work would agree) trade 3 days of sub freezing temperatures, instead of an AS9100 audit. Now four days of sub freezing temperatures might be a different story, but….
At least we’re good for another 6 months, and I sure feel a lot better now.

I may be cured! Inspirations, Thoughts
|
I really doubt it, but what happened this evening, after I got home from my golf Men’s Club meeting, just warmed the cockles of my heart.
Shortly after getting home, the Emergency Department at Kaiser Permanente called in reference to my most recent blood work, I had done earlier this afternoon, in preparation for my appointment with my doctor tomorrow morning.
They were aware of the fact that I had lymphoma, but still called to report my White Blood Cell (WBC) count was 81.9 with 98% lymphocytes.
I was shocked, not only because 89.1 is about 20% lower than it was last month (which is a good thing), but with the fact that they bothered to call at all, and that they were concerned with the possibility I may be having a fever or chills or something else.
My guess is it’s actually an error, and my WBC hasn’t dropped 20%, but even if it is an error, I thought that was very nice of Kaiser Emergency personnel, to take the extra time to review the report, and call. In my opinion, that is above and beyond the call of duty, and service I doubt many other health care providers would have provided.
That, plus the fact that I won $20 at the meeting this evening, is making the start of 2007 look better and better.

Morris - 2, Rats - 0 Inspirations, Thoughts, Whatever
|
Edie and I have had a number of cats since we’ve been married , and I can easily say that every cat we have owned has had a totally different personality.
While dogs generally have very similar personalities, their main goal in life being to please their masters, cats really don’t care. When a cat shows you love and affection, it’s not because they want or need something, it’s because they truly love you.
And that is what I love most about cats. They are fiercely independent. Some people have trained their cats to be dependent on them, by declawing them, and/or forcing them to stay indoors, but I have always felt that was cruel and unusual punishment. (We declawed three of our cats, when we moved to Houston in 1978, but I refuse to do that again to any cat.)
Cats are hunters, and they still have some of that wild, undomesticated instincts living within them. They are also destined to be outdoors, and need their claws to climb trees, to get away from attackers, as well as being able to defend themselves when necessary.
And last night Morris proved once again, just how accurate my assessment is, by bringing home another rat, and the second one in four days.
Fortunately this time, Morris didn’t wake us up.
I only discovered it, when I got up in the middle of the night, to go to the bathroom, and saw the rat lying beside him.
It seems Morris was patiently waiting for one of us to get up, to show us his trophy, before proceeding to eat it, or so I thought. (He didn’t eat this one either.)
Anywaze, I really wanted to add how pleasant it is listening to the crunching of bones, while you sit on the commode, as your cat ensures the death of its prey.
Morris is such a good boy!

Brrrr!! Cycling, Inspirations, Thoughts

The thing that makes training in the winter time is the cold. It’s not the temperature so much, but the extra close you have to dawn in order to brave the cold.
When the temperature gets below 55oF, long tights are a must, as is a long sleeve jersey, and toe warmers. When it get’s below 50oF, it’s time to break out the gloves, and head covering. Below 40oF, I won’t even ride!
Of course I have a very low tolerance for cold, and I typically dress warmer than most other people, and sometimes that can be a disadvantage, as it was today. (Fortunately I was by myself.
This morning it was about 47oF when I left the house (it was 41oF, when I got up), so I was in full gear, gloves, hat, toe warmers, long sleeve jersey and long tights. But that wasn’t was cause me to have such a terrible ride.
The problem was, it got damn warm in a hurry. So after about 10 miles I was becoming pretty overheated. I usually don’t mind being a little overheated, but for some reason, I did today, and I just couldn’t seem to have any get up and go. After another mile or two, I decided I’d better at least take my gloves and head covering off, and after another 10 miles I eventually recovered, and started to feel better.
Fortunately I hadn’t planned a long ride (only 34 miles), because tomorrow is a hard ride with one of the local clubs in the area, and I didn’t want to wear myself out. And fortunately it is supposed to be above 50oF tomorrow morning.
So, anywaze, for the remainder of the day, I decided to rest, and set up this blog.
