It wasn’t a good day for golf

categories Golf

It’s hard to believe yesterday was so nice, when you consider how miserable it was today.

It didn’t rain, but the Santa Ana’s were still blowing, and the temperature was about 20oF colder than it was yesterday.

I knew it would be colder, but I wasn’t prepared for the combination of wind and cold. It did not make for a good day to be playing in my first mens club golf tournament.

And on top of all that, I think I may have hurt my back. :(

I’ll know better when I try to get up to go to work tomorrow.

My golf game sucks!

categories Golf

In my opinion, golf is by far the most difficult sport to master. With the exception of maybe hitting a baseball moving at 100+ miles per hour, there is no other sport that requires so my skill.

It’s amazing, how you can hit one shot so pure and sweet, and then hit the next 10, like you’ve never hit a golf ball before. And no matter how good you may hit the ball on the practice range, when you get on the course, it’s like you’ve entered a different dimension.

Today, for me, was just such an example.

On the first hole, I hit my drive 240 yards, down the middle of the fairway, and went on to par the hole.

On the second hole, my drive was not quite as good as the first, but it still ended up in the middle of the fairway. I then proceeded to hit my second shot so pure and so sweet, and right on target, I could have been mistaken for a pro.

But what happened next is exactly what I’ve been talking about.

It’s like I forgot how to play, and it wasn’t until the 9th hole, before I managed to hit a drive anywhere close to the one I hit on the first hole.

Fortunately I quit after 9 holes, so I wouldn’t have to subject anyone with any more details.

Another tough day

categories Golf, Thoughts

It seems like every day gets tougher and tougher.

This morning was a little colder than it has been “lately”, so I waited till 8 AM, when the temperature got to 50oF, before venturing out for my bike ride.

Because it was a little colder and a little later than I normally like to go out, I decided to go for a slightly easier, but longer ride than I had originally planned.

Non of that made any difference though. I was still tired after the ride, and ended up just hitting some golf balls on the driving range instead of playing 18 holes like I originally planned.

I actually didn’t feel that bad, and could have played, but thought just hitting balls and working on tempo would be more beneficial. (I’m playing in a Select Drive tournament with the Men’s Club on Sunday, so I don’t want to over do it. :) )

Oh, BTW, my luck hasn’t all been bad lately.

Last night at the Men’s Club meeting I won a $50 golf shirt for $10 worth of raffle tickets. Of course the shirt was too big. I was able to exchange it in the pro shop, but had to spend an additional $14 for a different shirt that fit.

Finally time to unwind

categories Cycling, Golf, Pet Peeves, Thoughts

Well I managed to make it home last night at a little after 7 PM. Edie had dinner waiting for me, and after 2 glasses of wine, I was able to finally unwind from the, as Becky put it, “mind numbing” meeting. (There was actually a point in that meeting, I felt like walking out and retiring, but I didn’t.)

I had hoped to leave early, and go to the gym for a short workout and jog on the treadmill, but that was not to be.

That may have actually turned out to be a good thing, as I felt really good, when I went on my bike ride this morning. I think the extra rest day did me some good.

While my hill climb times weren’t great, they were reasonable, considering how little training I had been doing, because of the cold weather.

I even went golfing afterwards, for the first time in over a week. I didn’t play very good, but again, because of the weather, I haven’t been practicing as much as I should.

Still today was a good day, in spite of the fact, when I got home, I was greeted with an email from the customer, regarding yesterday’s meeting, which required some responses on my part.

The responses weren’t very difficult, but I have a feeling, the customer may not like some of them. For that reason I didn’t send my responses just yet, choosing to talk with our sales department to get their concurrence, before I do.

Maybe I haven’t wound down as much as I thought after all. But one thing is for sure I’m not going to give it any more thought this weekend.

Good thing I rode yesterday

categories Golf, Thoughts

Because at 43oF, at 4:30 AM (and it will get colder), it’s the coldest morning in over a week, and I have no desire to dawn all the clothes necessary to go for a bike ride this morning.

Instead I’ll go to the gym, work out with weights, and hopefully have enough energy left over to do a 30+ minute run on the treadmill.

That should give me plenty of time to take care of all my other errands today, which include taking Sylvia to get her new Durable Power of Attorney notarized, and start the process of rolling over her current IRA, which is in a Florida bank, to one here in California, and still get 18 holes of golf in (it’s supposed to be a nice day today).

It always pays to stay motivated and exercise.
