A good nights sleep

categories Thoughts

When ever I get one good nights sleep, I am happy. I have even written about it before. But when I get two good nights sleep in a row, that is like…. monumental.

I did write about getting two good nights sleep in a row back in January, but even that can’t compare to the two previous nights.

I didn’t toss or turn for any length of time either night, and while I got up twice last night to go to the bathroom, compared to only once the night before, I was able to almost immediately fall back to sleep.

It was truly refreshing.

Now if only the weather will get a little warmer and sunnier, I’ll be a lot happier.

It wasn’t a good day for golf

categories Golf

It’s hard to believe yesterday was so nice, when you consider how miserable it was today.

It didn’t rain, but the Santa Ana’s were still blowing, and the temperature was about 20oF colder than it was yesterday.

I knew it would be colder, but I wasn’t prepared for the combination of wind and cold. It did not make for a good day to be playing in my first mens club golf tournament.

And on top of all that, I think I may have hurt my back. :(

I’ll know better when I try to get up to go to work tomorrow.

It sure was hot today

categories Cycling, Thoughts

This past December and January have been the coldest, I can remember, since moving to California, but now we seem to be experiencing the warmest February ever.

This morning when I left for my usual Saturday bike ride, it was 52oF, and I dressed appropriately for that temperature, not thinking it would get too hot, until after the ride was over.

By the time I got 3 miles from the house, I knew I was going to have trouble. It was already starting to get warm, and when we reached the coast, I had to unzip both jerseys and pull my cap from my ears.

And at the start of the hammer zone, it was 82oF. Way to hot for the amount of clothes I had on.

Still I managed to finish the ride, but it was tough. I decided to go with the first group today, for whatever reason, and in the end I think that may have been a mistake. 35 mph on level ground, is at my upper limit of speed, even if I have a good draft.

I got dropped at least twice, but managed to catch up with the main group when they caught a red light, before succumbing to the pace, and joining another group, of about 10 also struggling riders, to finish the ride, before going to the coffee shop to relax.

Of course the ride home, after 20 minutes of relaxing, into a strong head wind was no picnic either, even if I wasn’t working that hard.

So now I’m sitting in front of the TV, trying to recover, while I watch PITT about to beat Washington in basketball (3.5 seconds to go, and a 3 point lead), after which I’ll watch the Nissan Open golf tournament.

My golf game sucks!

categories Golf

In my opinion, golf is by far the most difficult sport to master. With the exception of maybe hitting a baseball moving at 100+ miles per hour, there is no other sport that requires so my skill.

It’s amazing, how you can hit one shot so pure and sweet, and then hit the next 10, like you’ve never hit a golf ball before. And no matter how good you may hit the ball on the practice range, when you get on the course, it’s like you’ve entered a different dimension.

Today, for me, was just such an example.

On the first hole, I hit my drive 240 yards, down the middle of the fairway, and went on to par the hole.

On the second hole, my drive was not quite as good as the first, but it still ended up in the middle of the fairway. I then proceeded to hit my second shot so pure and so sweet, and right on target, I could have been mistaken for a pro.

But what happened next is exactly what I’ve been talking about.

It’s like I forgot how to play, and it wasn’t until the 9th hole, before I managed to hit a drive anywhere close to the one I hit on the first hole.

Fortunately I quit after 9 holes, so I wouldn’t have to subject anyone with any more details.

Another tough day

categories Golf, Thoughts

It seems like every day gets tougher and tougher.

This morning was a little colder than it has been “lately”, so I waited till 8 AM, when the temperature got to 50oF, before venturing out for my bike ride.

Because it was a little colder and a little later than I normally like to go out, I decided to go for a slightly easier, but longer ride than I had originally planned.

Non of that made any difference though. I was still tired after the ride, and ended up just hitting some golf balls on the driving range instead of playing 18 holes like I originally planned.

I actually didn’t feel that bad, and could have played, but thought just hitting balls and working on tempo would be more beneficial. (I’m playing in a Select Drive tournament with the Men’s Club on Sunday, so I don’t want to over do it. :) )

Oh, BTW, my luck hasn’t all been bad lately.

Last night at the Men’s Club meeting I won a $50 golf shirt for $10 worth of raffle tickets. Of course the shirt was too big. I was able to exchange it in the pro shop, but had to spend an additional $14 for a different shirt that fit.
