Sometimes I wonder

categories Cycling, Pet Peeves, Thoughts

When I go to the gym to work out, I always expect to see personal trainers/instructors that are at least in as good a condition, or better than myself.

That, however, has not proven to be the case in the gym I frequent.

In that gym there are at least 4 personal trainers I have seen. Most look in pretty good shape, but there is one, who I see most often, who is about as wide as he is tall.

For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone would want to have a trainer who does not look the part of a personal trainer.

And this morning put me in that position.

I took a spinning class, and the instructor did not at all look like a cyclist, nor did he even look like he was in very good shape.

I’ve taken this class before, and this was not the case with the other instructor, so I was surprised when this person walked in. (I originally thought he was a student, but that was not the case.)

I should have known something was wrong, when the girl next to me, left after she saw the instructor. I’m not sure if she left because she didn’t like the instructor, or it was for some other reason, but it sure was strange.

Anywaze, I did the full 45 minute workout, and I managed to get a good, hard workout, in spite of the instructor.

Maybe that should be a lesson to me and everyone else.

It’s not the instructor that makes the difference, it’s the amount of effort you put into training that makes the difference.

I was going to ride today

categories Cycling

But when I went outside, the wind was starting to pick up, the roads appeared slightly damp, from the rain last night, and it felt a little colder than the 50oF the thermometer was indicating.

I think the perception of the temperature being colder was do to the dampness in the air, so considering everything, and the fact I wasn’t able to pick up my new shoes yesterday, I decided not to ride on the road.

Instead I plan on going to the gym, and do the spinning class. Those typically end up being harder than a road ride anyways, so I shouldn’t lose any fitness, nor will I be going back on my commitment to increase the amount and intensity of my workouts.

Plus, now that February is just about over, I am optimistic that the weather will be begin to improve measurably, and I will be getting a lot more riding in.  So I don’t have to over do it just yet.

It’s raining this morning

categories Thoughts

And I’m actually feeling good about it.

I don’t have to drive into work this morning, since I am meeting some customers, at our sister company (only 10 miles from where I live), to discuss a new part we are making for the F22 Raptor aircraft.

It was quite conveniet, since the customer was also meeting with our sister company to watch the production of some powder metal parts.

So the fact that it is raining, and I don’t have to drive into work, are making for a good start to the day.

Oh, and as a plus, my new cycling shoes are in, so I get to pick them up this afternoon, and even use them tomorrow, which I wouldn’t have been able to do, had I gone into work today.

Sometimes customers aren’t such pains in the butt. :)

What a ride!

categories Cycling, Thoughts

Today’s ride was, by far, the toughest ride I have done in a long time.

It wasn’t that long, only 52 miles, but on the way home, there was, what as of late has become typical, a very strong head wind.

Fortunately, there was plenty of help, in the name of other riders to protect me from the wind, but with still about 13 miles to go, a small group of us got stuck at a red light, and could not catch the front group. The ride then ended up, much like the Saturday’s Hammer Zone ride.

But you know what they say,

What doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger

I can only hope it won’t kill me.

Now I’m off to watch the last stage of the Amgen Tour of California, taking place in Long Beach along Ocean Blvd.
