Slept till 6:30 AM this morning

categories Cycling, Thoughts

I can’t remember the last time I did that. I’m usually up by 5 or 5:30 AM.

I didn’t even hear Edie get up, which is even more unusual.

I’m almost wishing now I hadn’t decided not to ride yesterday, as I really feel like sleeping some more, but two days off from the bike, especially since it’s supposed to rain tomorrow, would not be good.

So I guess I’d better start getting ready for my ride. At least the temperature is above 40oF, and it is supposed to get above 70oF.

We haven’t had too many of those days lately, so you have to enjoy them while you can.

Not riding today

categories Cycling, Thoughts

As it turns out, I have come up with an excuse not to ride this morning after all.

After 3 days of riding, 2 of which were pretty hard, plus dinner last night, where I ate and drank a little too much, I decided my body needs a rest.

I’ll just ride Tuesday instead.

I wasn’t planning on riding Tuesday, because I wanted to go to the Performance Bike shop sale, and maybe buy a new bike (they were offering an extra 20% off, if you go between 8 AM and 10 AM), but I decided the two bikes I have are fine for now. If I decide I want a new bike sometime in the future, I’ll make a more informed decision later.

So now I guess I better go rest up for the 50 mile drive to the Valley, for Christmas dinner with the family, later on today.

Everyone have a good Christmas!

What a day!

Sometimes I surprise even myself

After a very hard spinning class on Friday (remember it rained that day), then a faster and harder than expected ride on Saturday, I still had enough left to go on a 45 mile ride today.

I admit I sat at the back most of the ride, so I wouldn’t have to work too hard, but still I was able to keep up with the occasional sprint or just plain bursts of speed without any problem.

Of course life still managed to throw me a few little twists, just to make sure I didn’t get too complacent.

Just after reaching the half way point in this mornings ride, and while going down a short, but steep hill, my front brake cable let loose. It surprised me, as I was using the front break to help slow me down, and I missed the turn I was about to make. I did managed to slow enough with the rear brake, and get back on course with little additional problem.

At first I thought the cable snapped, but as it turned out, the bolt that holds the cable to the brake broke, causing the brake to fail.

And as if that wasn’t enough, when I was about 3 miles from home, I started hearing a tap tap tapping sound, which I knew was something stuck in my tire. I also knew if I stopped, and removed what ever was there, the tire would go flat. So I kept riding, hoping for the best.

I did make it home with out incident, but when I checked, aI found a thumb tack was imbedded in the rear tire. When I removed it, the tire immediately went flat as I expected.

I was easily able to fix the flat, but didtn’t have as much luck solving my brake problem.

Neiither of the two local bike shops had a replacement bolt. Fortunately I was able to use a bolt off the brake on my spare bike, until I can get to the Performance Bike shop on Tuesday.

They’re having a 20% off sale on Tuesday, so now I have an excuse to go there. Hopefully they will have a replacement bolt, otherwise, I may have to buy a new bike.

But now I don’t have an excuse not to ride tomorrow. :)

Restaurant reviews

categories Whatever

Well it seems that I pissed off Dave from Delius Restaurant, with my post, Getting the most out of life on my other blog.

Although I did tell a friend, who knows Dave on a more personal level, I never expected him to read the post, nor did I expect him to respond (you can read his response here).

I did want the message to get to him in a more forceful manner, then I was apparently able to convey at the dinner, but more importantly, what I was trying to convey in my post, was just how much added significance everything, even the little things, take on, when you’re trying to get the most out of life.

I certainly succeeded in the first aspect, but not the latter.
