Talk about inexact sciences! Thoughts
|
Predicting the weather has to be either the most difficult thing to understand, ahead of medicine and metallurgy, or there just aren’t any competent people in the field.
This morning, I went out, for my bike ride, about an hour earlier than I intended. All the weather forecasts were predicting high winds like yesterday, and I sure didn’t want to get caught in such awful conditions.
So at 7:30 AM, with the winds still calm and the temperature at 40oF, I headed north hoping to beat the wind. I went north because the predicted wind direction was supposed to be from the north, and should the wind pick up, I wanted to have an easy ride back.
Well, as it turned out the winds never picked up, but it sure was cold for most of the ride. Even now, about an hour and a half since finishing my ride, the winds are still calm, and it’s a balmy 60oF. Nothing at all like the conditions yesterday at the same time.
I could have waited!
Now though, it does appear that the winds are starting to pick up slightly. I guess that’s not so bad, huh? The weather man was only off by about 4 hours in timing, and 10 mph in wind speed.
I sure wish I had as much latitude in doing my job as the weather man.
